چکیده

The number of Internet news media outlets has grown rapidly in recent years. This paper analyzes the effects of media proliferation on electoral outcomes and social welfare. We assume voters are information-seeking but choose outlets that are excessively partisan given the voters’ own ideological preferences, due to quasi-rationality. We find that if voters who think (correctly or not) that they prefer extreme outlets may influence the election, then media proliferation strictly improves welfare. Otherwise, welfare cycles as the number of outlets increases. In general, welfare is lowest when there are only one or two media outlets, for all levels of rationality. Media Mergers and Media Bias with Rational Consumers: Extended Version

We present an economic model of media bias and media mergers. Media owners have political motives as well as profit motives, and can influence public opinion by withholding information that is pejorative to their political agenda — provided that their agenda is not too far out of the political mainstream. This is true even with rational consumers who understand the media owners’ biases, because...

Impacts of plant growth regulators and culture media on in vitro propagation of three apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) rootstocks

Apple is one of the most important temperate-zone fruit trees in the world. Micropropagation of apple scion and rootstocks is an important method of rapid production of healthy and disease-free plants. In this research, in vitro propagation of three apple roottocks including Azayesh-Esfahan, Morabbaee-Mashhad and M9 was investigated. Shoot proliferation carried out in two basal media (MS and WP...

Low density expansion for Lyapunov exponents

In some quasi-one-dimensional weakly disordered media, impurities are large and rare rather than small and dense. For an Anderson model with a low density of strong impurities, a perturbation theory in the impurity density is developed for the Lyapunov exponent and the density of states. The Lyapunov exponent grows linearly with the density. Anomalies of the Kappus-Wegner type appear for all ra...

Aggregators, search and the economics of new media institutions

Proliferation of content on the internet offers consumers access to more sources than had been possible with traditional media. Disaggregated content also increases the relevance of targeting for advertisers. But at the same time, search costs increase the role of intermediaries in media consumption in ways that are poorly understood. This paper studies the effects of search technology and aggr...
